At the age of 50, the author, then a biology teacher in Switzerland, met a retired American while on vacation in Portugal’s Algarve. He introduced her to bicycling and, three years later, they biked from Portugal to their wedding in Switzerland. Over 12 years, they spent part of each year on two wheels, most of them on a specially made tandem, journeying through countries in Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and South America.
Shepard kept a daily account of their travels and mined them to write lively descriptions of people, plants, culture, history, food, sounds, and smells that kept me turning the pages. Polished vegetables in an Istanbul market were “arranged to produce a feast for the eyes.” A Jordanian truck driver passed them on a long, steep hill and waited at the top with tea for them. Of course there were mishaps along the way—problems with accommodations, weather, punctured tires, even theft of their beloved tandem (fortunately recovered). I frequently referred to the helpful maps of their routes that accompany each chapter. I am not a cyclist, but that didn’t diminish the pleasure of traveling vicariously through the pages of this lovely book.
I really enjoyed this book, and have recommended it to my friends.
This is delightful - a great adventure/love story.
Follow routes across a variety of countries and continents sharing the delights and challenges of long distance cycling. This book does not gloss over the hard parts, a true adventure story.
What a wonderful ride! I went on a vicarious journey, appreciating the food, landscapes, and the people they met, along with Irene and Burley across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Highly recommended!
What an adventure and it spans decades of interesting and beautiful places on bicycles and a Tandem bicycle. This is truly the best way to travel, but it come with at times hardships, fear and the never disapating joy one gets after a gorgeous day in the saddle.

Irene Shephard gives you insight into things you would never see when traveling with tours or in automobiles and trains.
Most of us will never make this kind of world tour but this book offers a marvelous vicarious experience. And, for those young, strong
and adventurous souls, you will be inspired by Burley and Irene Shephard's experiences.
